AbstractThis paper focuses on the use of orbital SAR images to map areas affected by flood and landslide events in the region of Itajaí Valley, Santa Catarina (Brazil). The images were acquired by different imaging radar sensors (ALOS/PALSAR, ENVISAT/ASAR, RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X) before, during and after the disasters, which took place during November 2008. The images were previously orthorectified and filtered for speckle noise reduction. For the mapping of the flooded areas it was used the unsupervised ISODATA classifier. The identification of landslide scars was performed through visual analysis under a 3D perspective of a high-resolution TerraSAR-X scene. The investigation showed that it was possible the identification of patches of floods and their temporal dynamics based on orbital SAR images acquired by different sensors and under different configurations and dates. In addition, it was possible to detect landslides scars with the use of 3D perspective viewing using a DEM and a high spatial resolution X-band data (TerraSAR-X). In emergency situations, the usage of SAR images offers advantages over optical data because the SAR imaging is independent of weather and solar illumination conditions. Thus, this type of approach is strategic for monitoring and management actions in circumstance of natural disasters such as the 2008 events in Santa Catarina.
